8BitDo Introduces Xbox-Themed Gaming Keyboard and Mouse
8BitDo has unveiled its latest addition to the gaming accessory market: the 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition, a retro-inspired mechanical keyboard styled after Microsoft’s original Xbox console. Featuring a semi-transparent green chassis and RGB lighting, it’s now available for pre-order on Amazon for $119.99, with shipments starting January 16, 2025. The company also announced a matching 8BitDo Retro R8 Mouse, though pre-orders for the mouse are not yet live.
Key Features of the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard
The compact 87-key layout includes functional keys, a Windows key, and an additional Xbox logo key that activates the Windows Game Bar. Built with Kailh Jellyfish X switches, the keyboard features dual-layer ABS keycaps and is compatible with 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2, allowing users to customize key functions and program macros.
Adding to its retro appeal, the package includes two programmable Super Buttons—large external buttons that can also be configured for macros or other functions.
The keyboard boasts eight RGB lighting modes, including animated effects and per-key illumination. Powered by a 2000 mAh battery, it offers up to 200 hours of use on a single charge without RGB lighting. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz wireless, and a USB-C cable for wired use.
Retro R8 Mouse – Xbox Edition
Styled to match the Retro 87 keyboard, the 8BitDo Retro R8 Mouse – Xbox Edition features a semi-transparent green body and programmable buttons in the iconic colors of Xbox controller buttons.
Key specifications:
- Optical sensor PAW 3395 with adjustable sensitivity from 50 to 26,000 DPI
- Programmable buttons (4 total, two on each side)
- Adjustable polling rates from 125 Hz to 8000 Hz
- Kailh Sword GM X switches rated for up to 100 million clicks
The mouse’s 450 mAh battery supports up to 100 hours of use with Bluetooth or between 26 to 105 hours on 2.4 GHz wireless, depending on the chosen polling rate. A matching charging dock is also available, which doubles as a signal amplifier for a more stable connection.
This duo feels like a love letter to Xbox nostalgia wrapped in modern gaming functionality. The keyboard’s programmable Super Buttons are a quirky but fun addition, and the mouse’s high-end specs ensure it’s more than just a novelty item. The retro translucent green design is perfect for Xbox fans, though I’d personally love to see this line expanded to other classic console themes—imagine a GameCube-inspired purple set!
If you’re a gamer who values style as much as performance, this might just be the retro-futuristic upgrade your desk needs. Would you pick this up, or is it too niche for your taste?
