Mahindra Introduces Its First Electric Cars Developed with Volkswagen

Platform and Performance

Both models are built on the Inglo platform, which uses components from Volkswagen’s MEB architecture. The cars feature typical EV setups: McPherson struts at the front, multi-link suspension at the rear, and the traction battery positioned under the cabin floor.

The BE 6e and XEV 9e are equipped with a single rear electric motor available in two power options—231 hp or 286 hp, with identical torque of 380 Nm. Initially rear-wheel drive, an additional front motor option will be offered later.

Performance stats for the higher-powered variants:

  • BE 6e: 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds
  • XEV 9e: 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds

Battery and Range

Both SUVs utilize BYD Blade lithium iron phosphate batteries with capacities of 59 kWh or 79 kWh. Estimated range:

  • BE 6e: up to 550 km (WLTP cycle)
  • XEV 9e: up to 533 km (WLTP cycle)

Fast-charging capability allows the battery to go from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes with a 175 kW charger. Mahindra also offers a lifetime warranty on the battery packs.

The SUVs feature a futuristic angular design with key differences in size:

  • Mahindra BE 6e:
    • Length: 4371 mm
    • Width: 1907 mm
    • Height: 1627 mm
    • Cargo volume: 455 liters (+45 liters in front trunk)
  • Mahindra XEV 9e:
    • Length: 4790 mm
    • Width: 1905 mm
    • Height: 1690 mm
    • Cargo volume: 665 liters (+150 liters in front trunk)

Both models share the same wheelbase: 2775 mm.

The SUVs are now available for pre-order in India:

  • Mahindra BE 6e: starting at $22,800
  • Mahindra XEV 9e: starting at $26,400

My Take
It’s fascinating to see Mahindra stepping into the electric game with Volkswagen’s support. While the lifetime battery warranty is a bold move, the real test will be how these SUVs handle real-world conditions. And let’s face it, the futuristic design and impressive range are already making me want to test-drive one. Anyone else? ​
