OpenAI Launches a "Hotline" for ChatGPT (With a Real Number)

On the 10th day of announcements, OpenAI gave ChatGPT its own phone number: 1-800-242-8478.

For now, only users in the United States can call the chatbot, but others are encouraged to add the number to WhatsApp and chat through the app. Phone calls are currently limited to 15 free minutes per phone number per month.

According to Ars Technica, during the call, users hear a voice saying: "Hi again, this is ChatGPT, your AI assistant. This conversation may be monitored for safety. How can I assist you?" Callers can ask ChatGPT the same questions they’d typically type in a chat but engage in a more natural, interactive conversation.

OpenAI views this feature as a "significant step for AI newcomers," offering a simplified version of ChatGPT and a cost-effective way to experiment with artificial intelligence through familiar channels.

Interestingly, Google launched a similar tool in 2007 called GOOG-411, offering free voice assistance as a directory service. After three years, the service was discontinued without explanation, but its primary goal—gathering voice samples for speech recognition technology—was likely achieved. OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson stated that the company will not use these calls to train large language models.

My Take
Introducing a call feature is an exciting step that makes AI feel more personal and approachable. While 15 minutes may seem limited, it's probably enough to let users test the waters. However, I can't help but wonder: will this lead to widespread adoption, or is it just another novelty that will fade over time? It’s a bold move, and one that might redefine how we interact with AI in our daily lives.
